posting

i just got back from a two week stint in the "field" in northern katanga. stops included kabalo, kongolo and kalemie. since i've had issues with loading photos onto the blog, here are a few impressions:

• play is very important. work takes too much time and energy.
• it's fun to make up stories about having children, multiple husbands/partners/marriages, and being old.
• for any asians who want to work in drc, some advice: learn some kung-fu or karate. everyone will be impressed. (and bring along some knowledge of WWF and chuck norris movies.)
• cipro is so cheap here. if you need some, let me know.
• it's so surreal to be in such a visually stunning country, yet be surrounded by high levels of poverty, famine and sickness at the same time.
• the congolese people i met are remarkably resilient and hopeful-something we all need to strive for.
• there are too few days left in congo for me.
